Wachiya Chisasibi!

We left Montreal on an Air Creebec flight on the first of June. It took us five hours to get to Chisasibi, including a stop in Val-d’Or, where we met our supervisor (clinical educator), and one in Waskaganish.

We flew along the coast of James Bay between Waskaganish and Chisasibi and enjoyed the view.

We’re already all settled in at our accommodations. One of these trailers will be our home for the next two and a half months.

Our lovely supervisor guided us through the town and showed us the main buildings “down town” and the art of grocery shopping between the 3 stores in Chisasibi.  We’re still getting oriented and finding our way around town. Thankfully, you can always count on people to point you in the right direction when you get lost!

The Speech-Language Pathology office is located in the Multi-Service Day Center (MSDC), which is also home to the offices of several other health professionals from the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James bay. The MSDC provides services and programs for Elders and people with special needs. We are really enjoying getting to know the other professionals, the amazing staff team at the center, and the participants in the programs. The staff and participants mostly speak to each other in Cree. Being in the center is a great way to learn more about the Cree language and culture. We’re trying to learn some Cree words and phrases, but it’s a slow learning process!

We are lucky that both our trailer and the MSDC happen to be right along the La Grande river. We can go take a walk or have lunch and enjoy a great view whenever we want!

One last thing…  There is a saying in the community that if it snows in June, it means a caribou is being born. We think a few were born this week!
